Real off-road

June 20th, 2010

In its effort to assure us that the Grand Cherokee was no soft-roader, Jeep brought us to an off-road recreation area, letting us drive the vehicle over an obstacle course. Over a series of dirt roads we made use of the Sand/Mud setting, appropriate for the loose dirt and heavy ruts. We cranked the suspension to its maximum, 11 inch mbt shoes clearance height and proceeded forward. In some of the deeper ruts we were surprised the Grand Cherokee didn’t bottom out, while small mounds tested the break-over angle. With front wheels over the ridge the vehicle only scraped bottom when we went over a little fast.

For more serious challenges, we went to Rock mode, which automatically engages hill descent control. Ahead on the track, we looked doubtfully at what our Jeep minder called a rock garden, a series of small boulders set into the dirt that we were supposed to drive over. Trusting that everything would be all right, or at least that it wasn’t our own car, we headed into mbt walking shoes and were impressed as the Grand Cherokee made its way through, wheels rising and falling as they went over successive boulders. dancing a routine

June 20th, 2010

I found that by casting aside the controller, I was able to immerse myself in the games much more than I would have been able to otherwise. In fact, they reminded me of the imaginary games I used to play with my friends as a kid, pretending we were piloting starships or shooting imaginary guns.Another new technology at E3 has the potential to change how consumers get games and what they play them on.Startup game company OnLive last week launched an online mbt shoes service that streams games from its data centers to consumers as they are playing them.

With OnLive, consumers don’t have to worry about waiting for downloads as they do with other online game services; instead they can play the games instantly, as if they had already downloaded them. They also don’t have to worry about buying a pricey new console or a high-end PC. They just have to have a 6-megabit-per-second broadband connection, which isn’t too hard to come by these days.Much of the processing power and graphics capability needed to run OnLive’s games is provided by the company’s servers. Consumers can play even graphically complex games with 2- or 3-year old PCs. Later this year, the company plans to offer an inexpensive “mini-console” that mbt footwear will allow consumers to play the same games in their living rooms.

Because all the games are hosted by OnLive’s data centers, the company can create massively multiplayer versions of the games easily and can allow users to watch any of a number of different users play their games.I played a little bit of “Assassin’s Creed II” on OnLive, and it felt and looked just like I was playing it on a PC or a PlayStation 3. Instead, though, I was playing it on a regular MacBook, Apple’s lowest-end notebook computer, with the game data streamed to me over the Internet. While OnLive could change the way consumers get their games and what they play them on, Nintendo’s new 3DS could jump-start the world of 3-D gaming. In order to play stereoscopic 3-D games right now, consumers have to wear special glasses. Not only can those glasses look goofy, but mbt sport also can be expensive, costing more than $100 each. Moreover, consumers frequently will have to invest in new TVs or monitors to see the 3-D effect.

U.S. Highway 89 northeast of Flagstaff has been closed because of smoke from the blaze.

Crews on the ground, in air tankers and in helicopters are trying to protect homes.THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is mbt footwear.FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) A thick plume of smoke blotted out the blue sky north of Flagstaff on Sunday afternoon as a second wildfire moved through the area, forcing the evacuation of additional homes and an animal shelter.Coconino County authorities said residents of the Timberline Estates, Wupatki Trails and Fernwood neighborhoods were being asked to leave their homes. Authorities couldn’t immediately say how many people were affected. The Second Chance Animal Shelter also was being evacuated.About 170 homes already were evacuated Sunday because of the 350-acre Hardy wildfire on the southeastern side of Flagstaff, which started Saturday.

The second blaze was spotted Sunday on the north end of Shultz Pass. Coconino National Forest spokeswoman Karen Malis-Clark said the fire was torching treetops and sending up a “pretty impressive towering column of smoke.”Hot shot crews, helicopters and air tankers were fighting the flames.A shelter that had been set up by the American Red Cross at a Flagstaff middle school for residents displaced by the Hardy fire also was being used for evacuees from the Shultz fire.Fire officials did not know what sparked the second blaze. But a California man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of starting the Hardy fire by leaving behind hot coals at a campsite just outside the city.Randall Wayne Nicholson, 54, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of burning of a wildland, city spokeswoman Kimberly Ott said. oil spill

June 18th, 2010

“Frankly, we are shocked by the publicly available information that has been disclosed in recent investigations and during this week’s testimony that, among other things, indicates BP operated unsafely and failed to monitor and react to several critical warning signs during the drilling of the Macondo well,” Hackett said. Hackett’s terse statement landed just minutes before Moody’s Investor Service cut $12.6 billion worth of Anadarko debt to Ba1 from Baa3. The move puts Anadarko’s debt rating at junk status, likely making mbt shoes more costly for the company to borrow money.

BP wasted no time issuing its own statement, saying mbt shoes clearance “strongly disagrees” with Anadarko’s allegations. On Wednesday, BP agreed to set up a $20 billion escrow account that can be used to cover costs and damages stemming from the spill. While the account meets a White House demand that BP take responsibility for the spill, it doesn’t set a cap on liabilities or payments, leaving rating agencies and investors nervous about what the final cost might be. Anadarko’s broadside comes just a day after BP CEO Tony Hayward appeared in Washington before a House committee hearing called to find the cause of the April 20 blowout and explosion that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

The blast killed 11 workers and left behind a ruptured well that scientists estimate is spewing up to 60,000 barrels of crude a day into the Gulf of Mexico. Also on Friday, Edward Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat who chairs the House subcommittee on energy and the environment, told Bloomberg Television in an interview to be aired over the weekend that Anadarko and Mitsui should shoulder their share of the cleanup costs. Concerns over who gets stuck paying for a gusher that’s unlikely to be plugged for at least another month have prompted plenty of finger pointing in the industry. BP is taking most of the heat, and mbt m.walk has been repeatedly singled out by President Barack Obama as the company responsible for the spill. Withering criticism and market uncertainty have taken a heavy toll on BP’s share price, down nearly 48% since the accident. Anadarko’s share price has fallen 42% over the same period.

Job Creation

June 18th, 2010

U.S. President Barack Obama visited Columbus, Ohio Friday to mark the groundbreaking on the 10,000th road project funded by the American Recovery Act. The president’s visit is part of the administration’s efforts to shine a spotlight on the impact of the approximately $800 billion stimulus package on job creation. But some economists say the stimulus is creating fewer jobs than the White House claims.A little more than a year after Congress enacted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, President Barack Obama says the U.S. economy is on the path to recovery. “And today I return to Columbus to mark a milestone on the road to recovery: The 10,000th project launched under the Recovery Act. Mbt shoes’s worth a big round of applause,” he said.

The president’s visit to Ohio is part of a six week push to focus attention on the impact of the approximately 800 billion dollar stimulus on job creation.Vice President Joe Biden is Mr. Obama’s point man on the Recovery Act. “Thus far, we have allocated over $620 billion of the Act, and as a result, the Recovery Act is responsible for somewhere between 2.3 million and 2.8 million jobs that were either saved or created,” he said.A growing number of economists say the stimulus has indeed kept more Americans away from the unemployment lines. But Alan Viard, senior fellow at the conservative leaning American Enterprise Institute, says the White House numbers are inflated. “The fact that unemployment has remained mbt shoes clearance so high does suggest that the stimulus has not had as large an impact as the administration claims,” he said.

Without the stimulus, Viard admits unemployment would be higher than the current 9.7 percent, but he says the massive cash infusion into infrastructure projects has created fewer than a million jobs. “I think it made sense to do the stimulus, but it should have been smaller and better focused than the administration certainly did,” he said. Opposition Republicans claim more than three million jobs have been lost since the bill’s passage, and they say it contributes to the nation’s soaring debt. While analysts say no one knows for sure how many jobs the stimulus has created, President Obama says he’s under no illusions that one program alone can solve the nation’s economic problems. “So while the recovery may start with projects like this mbt lami, it can’t end here,” he said.

Work-Issued Pager

June 17th, 2010

A California police department did not violate the constitutional privacy rights of an employee when it audited the text messages on a pager the city had issued him, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Thursday. The decision represented only a preliminary effort to define public employees Fourth Amendment rights in the digital era, and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the court, took pains to say that mbt shoes was narrow and closely tied to the facts. Still, the decision puts government employees on notice that electronic communications on devices provided to them may not be subject to the Fourth Amendments protection against unreasonable searches, as long as their employers have a legitimate work-related purpose for inspecting the communications.

Justice Kennedy said the court was uncomfortable fashioning comprehensive legal rules, given the pace of technological and cultural change. The court must proceed with care when considering the whole concept of privacy expectations in communications made on electronic equipment owned by a government employer, he wrote in a part of the opinion joined by every member of the court except Justice Antonin Scalia. Cellphone and text message communications are so pervasive that some persons may consider them to be essential means or necessary instruments for self-expression, even self-identification, Justice Kennedy went on. On the other hand, the ubiquity of those devices has made them generally affordable, so mbt footwear could counter that employees who need cellphones or similar devices for personal matters can purchase and pay for their own.

The decision did not address the privacy rights of people employed by private companies. The case, City of Ontario v. Quon, No. 08-1332, involved a member of the police special-weapons team in Ontario, Calif. The officer, Sgt. Jeff Quon, used a pager issued to him by the Police Department to send and receive messages that were, in the trial judges words, to say the least, sexually explicit in nature. A city policy on computer, Internet and e-mail use made clear mbt chapa that the city had the right to monitor such communications. The policy allowed light personal communications but said users should have no expectation of privacy or confidentiality. Sergeant Quon signed a statement agreeing to the policy.

Euro steadies near 3-week highs

June 17th, 2010

Peripheral European debt markets calmed after the auction, whetting investors’ appetite for riskier assets and supporting higher-yielding currencies like the Australian and New Zealand dollars which hovered near one-month highs. In early Asian trade, the euro was at $1.2384, having gained 0.6 percent on Thursday, when mbt shoes rose to as high as $1.2413. It has advanced more than 2 percent so far this week, on track for its second straight week of gains and pulling away from a four-year low of $1.1876 struck on June 7.Traders said there were some light stops lined up above $1.2413 with near-term resistance at $1.2455, the single currency’s 2009 low hit during the global financial crisis.

The spread between Spanish government bond yields and benchmark German Bunds narrowed from a euro lifetime high after Thursday’s auction. The euro was also being helped by some soft U.S. economic numbers which saw the greenback cede ground as investors pushed back chances of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve.”The euro is being helped by a short-covering rally, mainly due to some good news out of Spanish bond auction and soft U.S. economic numbers,” said Gregg Gibbs, currency strategist at RBS, Sydney. “But I still think the euro is a sell into rallies and I expect mbt shoes clearance to see resistance at $1.25.”U.S. data showed a decline in the Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s mid-Atlantic manufacturing index while there was a rise in first-time jobless claims.

The dollar index .DXY was at 85.68 and technically mbt m.walk was looking vulnerable to a further fall after its broke through support around the 85.85 area. In the short term, the dollar index could fall to as low as 85.13 — the May 21 low — given the previous session’s bearish reversal. The dollar was marginally lower at 90.85 yen, having fallen 0.5 percent in the previous session after the weaker-than-expected U.S. data. The Swiss franc was also firm, having rallied after Switzerland’s central bank backed off its pledge to fight excessive currency strength now that deflation risks have receded. The dollar was at 1.1102 francs, not far from a one-month low of 1.1091 struck in the previous session. The euro was slightly lower on the franc at 1.3768, not far from a record low of 1.3731 hit on June 9.

BP drilling team

June 17th, 2010

Channeling the nation’s anger, lawmakers pilloried BP’s boss in a withering day of judgment Thursday for the oil company at the center of the Gulf calamity. Unflinching, BP chief executive Tony Hayward said he was out of the loop on decisions at the well and coolly asserted, “I’m not stonewalling.”That infuriated members of Congress even more mbt shoes, Democrats and Republicans alike.Testifying as oil still surged into the Gulf of Mexico and coated ever more coastal land and marshes, Hayward declared “I am so devastated with this accident,” “deeply sorry” and “so distraught.”

Yet the oil man disclaimed knowledge of any of the myriad problems on and under the Deepwater Horizon rig before the deadly explosion, telling a congressional hearing he had only heard about the well earlier in April, the month of the accident, when the BP drilling team told him it had found oil.”With respect, sir, we drill hundreds of wells a year around the world,” Hayward told Republican Rep. Michael Burgess of Texas.”Yes, I know,” Burgess shot back. “mbt shoes clearance’s what scaring me right now.”Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., told the CEO: “I think you’re copping out. You’re the captain of the ship.” Democrats were similarly, if more predictably, livid.”BP blew it,” said Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., chairman of the House investigations panel that held the hearing. “You cut corners to save money and time.”The verbal onslaught had been anticipated for days and unfolded at a nearly relentless pace.

With multiple investigations continuing and primary efforts in the Gulf focused on stopping the leak, there was little chance the nation would learn much from Hayward’s appearance about what caused the disaster. Yet even modest expectations were not met as the CEO told lawmakers at every turn that he was not tuned in to operations at the well.He said his underlings made the decisions and federal regulators were responsible for vetting mbt lami.Hayward spoke slowly and calmly in his clipped British accent as he sought to deflect accusations based on internal BP documents obtained by congressional investigators that BP chose a particular well design that was riskier but cheaper by at least $7 million.

support a resolution

June 16th, 2010

US Congressmen ratcheted up their criticism of Turkey Wednesday, warning that Ankara was risking its historically warm ties with Congress by reaching toward Iran and breaking with Israel. In a press conference defending Israels raid on a Turkish-flagged aid ship trying to break the Gaza blockade, several dozen of whose passengers had ties to terror organizations, numerous members of Congress turned their ire toward Turkey.Turkey is responsible for the nine deaths aboard that ship. It is not Israel thats responsible, declared Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nevada), who pointed to Turkish funding and support for the expedition. If Israel is at fault in any way, its by falling into the trap that was set for mbt shoes by Turkey.

She continued: The Turks have extraordinary nerve to lecture the State of Israel when they are occupiers of the island of Cyprus, where mbt footwear systematically discriminate against the ecumenical patriarch, and they refuse to recognize the Armenian genocide. Her comments C which were accompanied by an announcement that Turkish representatives were no longer welcome in her office C touched on sensitive issues with Turkey that the US has often shied away from pressing Ankara on aggressively. Her words raised the prospect that the US Congress at least would be more assertive about its displeasure with Turkey.Speaking at the same press conference, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Indiana) said he recently warned the Turkish ambassador that With regard to Congress of the United States, there will be a cost if Turkey stays on its current path of growing closed to Iran and more antagonistic to the State of Israel.

Among other issues, he said, he was now likely to switch his vote to support a resolution recognizing the mass killing of Armenians during the Ottoman empire as a genocide, a move he had voted against in the past because he thought relations with Turkey were more important.Turkey has vehemently opposed the resolution, briefly recalling its ambassador to the US when the measure passed a House committee earlier this year. The Obama administration, in keeping with past administrations, mbt chapa has opposed the resolution moving to the full chamber for a vote because of Turkish sensitivities. Many Jewish lobbies in Washington opposed the resolution on the same grounds.
